Admissions Arrangements

The school has established itself as a leading provider of education, therapy, care and support for young people with mild to moderate learning disabilities including: hemiplegia; physical, medical, anxiety disorders; and autistic spectrum difficulties.

We provide for the educational, emotional and social needs of children and young people, aged between 7 and 19 years, who experience problems with their learning. These are usually compounded by a physical, medical, language or communication difficulty which may cause them to become socially isolated or vulnerable in a mainstream setting.

The school will consider students for admission who have the needs outlined in our Admission Criteria. click here to download.

Open Afternoons

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to host open afternoons or offer face-to-face tours until further notice.

Applying for a place

Please find the relevant forms for Admissions and return to to request a school place.  SSS Application Form 2021

Formal applications for admission to the school should be made to the Headteacher who will arrange the start of our admissions process.  We will ask for documentation pertaining to the young person to be forwarded to the school so that an initial paperwork assessment can be made against our Admission Criteria.  If the young person meets the criteria we will explore further via the following routes

- Home visit (when COVID restrictions permit)

- Microsoft Teams meeting with current school / home tutor

- Microsoft Teams meeting with the parents and young person

- Short school visit to either Tower Road campus (Lower School) or Undershaw campus (Upper School and Post-16)

We do highlight, however, that if at any time the young person is deemed not to match our criteria we will cease the assessment at that stage.  This will be discussed with the family or authority requesting the placement with the best interests of the young person in mind.  If your child attends an assessment at Stepping Stones School, we will, out of courtesy, inform your Local Authority.

Our Promise

We always endeavour to help, and welcome enquiries from families, supporting and advising where we can.  However, your main advocate and key contact for pursuing an application will be your Local Authority.  At Stepping Stones, in partnership with families and Local Authorities, we strive to ensure that the needs of our children are fully met. In particular, we want our children to feel well supported, to be challenged to succeed and to be happy, with the result that progress is made and attainment is high.

If the school is oversubscribed, students interested in joining, and who have been accepted as suitable following assessment, can be placed on a applicant register and will be 'paperwork reviewed' in date order of application.  Please note this may take some weeks given the number of applications we receive.

If you require any assistance in the application process, or wish to speak to the school directly please contact Sarah Jones, Admissions Administrator on
